RSSI is raising funds to support Veterans this Memorial Day!

This Memorial Day, we’re asking you to help us support Chicago’s veterans.
I’d like to tell you about Milton:

Milton was a homeless veteran living on the streets for 2 years before he was referred to Renaissance Social Services. He suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and struggled with depression after being honorably discharged from the US Navy.  He reflects on his homeless experience:

“I was mentally messed up,” Milton said. “I wanted to run away from my problems and ended up living in the streets. You name it, I slept there– parks, benches, and riding the CTA all night.”

When Milton reached out to RSSI, he was struggling to stay safe and to stay healthy.  We found him a new home and helped him connect with important benefits, like Veterans Administration health care, so that he could deal with his physical and mental health problem. Joei Johnson, RSSI’s Rapid Re-Housing Specialist found Milton a new home, which Milton said makes the all the difference in his life.

This is what Milton had to say after working with RSSI:

“On the streets, it’s hard to take your medication. Now I have a stable place to live… I don’t have to sleep with one eye open. I’m always telling fellow vets– take the services offered to you from Renaissance.”

Renaissance Social Services is asking you to pitch in to honor Chicago’s homeless vets this Memorial Day. Our goal is to raise $2000 to provide housing and supportive services for veterans living on Chicago’s streets.

This year, our work with homeless veterans is especially critical. The proposed federal budget includes deep cuts to many of the programs that many veterans rely on: VA benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), nutrition programs, and housing assistance programs. We are working hard to serve as many veterans as possible and connect them with affordable housing, health care, and employment services to get them back on their feet.

We can’t do this without your help.

A gift of $25, $50, or $100 will support the many homeless veterans on Chicago’s streets and in shelters.

Please consider making a gift today.

Michael Banghart
