Built in 1931, Lawson House is a gorgeous Art Deco landmark in the Gold Coast. The former headquarters of the Chicago YMCA, Lawson was once the largest single- room-occupancy structure in the city. Recently, Renaissance's partner Holsten Real
Estate Development completed a gut renovation of the building, creating 406 micro- apartments, each with a kitchenette and a bathroom. Renaissance clients now living at Lawson House have access to case management and onsite social services.
Vernesha, a Lawson House resident who shared her story with us.
Before Vernesha came to Lawson House, she had been homeless for almost 9 years. The stress and instability of being unhoused were taking a tremendous toll on her health. “I was sleeping on the train, I was sleeping in the park, anywhere I could lay my head. And I’ve got friends, but you don’t want to intrude. I used to spend a night at this friend’s house, that friend’s house, I was all over the place.”
After connecting with Renaissance, Vernesha moved into a beautiful corner apartment in May of 2024. She says that having her own space and a case manager who goes above and beyond has been incredible. “I’m so stress-free, I’m so worry- free. It’s just a beautiful thing when you can lay in your own bed and have your own key. You don’t have to wonder about where you’re gonna rest, where you’re gonna wash up at, or where your meals are coming from. It took a big load off my soul. “
“This apartment is the biggest blessing, next to having my kids... It has changed my life tremendously. I’m grateful to Renaissance, for real.”
